My mother had a beautiful and glowing skin and she knew hell of a lot about fashion and beauty. And because she lived in a place and time when skin care was not as advanced as it is here today, she was damn good at preparing home-made face and hair masks. I remember her reading lots of books and magazines studying ingredients and their benefits to skin and hair. She made her own original masks and I am so sad and frustrated that I didn’t manage to keep them.
She gave me a great lesson in beauty though – nature has the answer to anything. Whatever you are trying to do with your skin or hair the best answer could be as simple as mixing milk and honey. When I was trying to combat an oily hair what helped me most was the regular hair wash with an egg yolk. When I was suffering from extremely brittle nails, the best thing I used was pure argan oil. So, yes, I also love reading about what contains what and the benefits it holds for health and beauty.
Recently I started mixing stuff from the fridge to use on my face and hair and I have been very pleased with the results. So I thought I would start sharing my recipes.
To begin with, here is a recipe for a facial mask with avocado.
Why is avocado good for the skin?
Avocados are rich in vitamin A and an amino acid known as glutamine. Vitamin A removes dead skin cells from the face while glutamine cleanses and protects from environmental damage. Avocados are also full of fatty acids which moisturise and soften the skin. The fruit also has anti wrinkle effect due to the amount of antioxidants that it has. The benefits are endless. One of the best combination is between avocado and honey and this mix can be used on both face and hair for deep moisturising and conditioning.
In this mask I have combined avocado, honey, yoghurt and egg whites. Yoghurt and eggs also have huge beneficial effects on skin and hair. In this mask I have used them for their proteins and whitening effect.
Things you need:
Half of avocado
2 spoonfuls of yoghurt
1 spoonful of honey
1 egg white
Things to do:
Grate the avocado and a bowl and mix with the rest of the ingredients until you have a smooth batter. Apply to the face and leave for 15-20 mins. After 5 minutes you would feel your skin tighter. Wash with lukewarm water. Do this every morning before your regular skin care routine. The remaining could be stored in the fridge and used within a few days.
